Blog#8 - Culture, Design and Aliens -Santano!

Whether you're from the Caribbean, the Netherlands or outer-space understanding the culture of your audience and the culture they plan to release you're work in is pretty important.

Culture is the way of life of a people, how the interpret their signs and symbols, and most importantly, how aliens decide who to kill when going on space raids.

You see, being a designer is a lot like being an anthropologist, or an astronaut, except without the experience, science or anything really. One has to know their audience. Whatever one creates must suit the audience first, and must be sensitive to the culture it will be released in.

After all, Martians are not from Jupiter, and Jupiter is pretty weird.

Keep in mind that people (and aliens!) from different places see things differently. Signs and symbols from one society have completely different meanings in another.

It is imperative that as designers we remain sensitive to this fact, lest we design Qualtophs with Mozzelnoffs for  Jupitarians (Jupitarianites?) and Golboxx with Wizzlenoxx for Martians. Because we all know why that's a bad idea.

  1. Seriously, I lol while reading this. And I did it more than once too. Especially to the end. Thank you Santano. Thank you. You have proven that grading is a fun activity (sometimes....no, a few times....no, hardly ever).
