Blog #10 - Name at least 1 thing that you believe you have learnt in this class.

I have learnt that the value of clear communication is better than great designs skills with a ignorance to effective communication. As designer our greatest responsibility is not just creating media but communicating a message effectively. Communication can be most effective when the design created compliments the message.

Blog #10 Name at least 1 thing that you believe you have learnt in this class.

In this course I have learnt a number of things. Most importantly I have learnt that planning is very important when designing. When we plan before we start a design it consumes less time. Even though it may take up some time before starting the project it will more than make up later down the line. Planning will allow the project to go smoothly without as many challenges. I have learnt about using mind maps as a method of planning. It makes it easier to spot potential problems and the power to fix them before getting stuck in the middle of the design. I was even introduced to trello which is an app that is ideal for group work.It is very flexible and can be used on mobile and on a computer. Planning is great!!! Follow these three simple steps:

  1. Plan
  2. Implement
  3. Complete

What I have learned from MDIA 2002

I can certainly say that I have learned many valuable things from this class; the very first is the importance of planning any project that any one will have to complete. In fact planning how one will carry out a project is the first step that must be taken. It allows you to be able to analyze the task at hand and make it more manageable. You will immediately know what tools and resources that you have and what needs to be acquired to complete the project. It helps to stay on schedule when meeting deadlines and makes it easier to make adjustments when things suddenly change. Planning also make s coordinating work among a team more efficient and allows it to operate like a well oiled engine, ensuring that the project is completed  with high standards.

I also learned just how important in is to have clear communication when interacting with people.  It is important both in or professional and personal lives. Clear and effective communication is what makes the difference between landing a new client and the success of any venture. It is important to always ask questions whenever there is a missed understanding in order to avoid the pit falls of poor communication. If communication is unclear this can lead to loss of revenue of a business to break down in relationships in our personal lives. As stated before there are many things that I have learned  in this class such as interpersonal communication, differences in culture and its effects on business, The several different types of reports and document styles, When to use the appropriate document format and the importance of team work. However effective communication and planning are the topics, which I found the most interesting.

Blog #9 Is it important to practice Emotional Intelligence when conducting business communication? Why?

Emotional intelligence is all about being sensitive to other peoples emotions and the ability to improve performance. I think it is very important to practice emotional intelligence in business communication because it helps to create a relationship with the client and the designer. With emotional intelligence it helps to be a good leader in the long run.

Blog #9 - Is it important to practice Emotional Intelligence when conducting business communication? Why?

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to identify and manage emotions within your self and others. In the world of communication, a letter to one person can be interpreted differently by that same person on separate occasions based on their emotional stability or instability on the day of interpretation. Understanding emotional intelligence will lead to clearer, more concise, effective and efficient communications as it allows the communicator to choose wordings more carefully and even more appropriate times to deal with different types of communication matters.

Blog #8 Why would you take into consideration culture when developing your artwork?

Some cultures find the color red offensive where other cultures may see red as a celebration like in Asians nations. This simply knowledge makes a world of difference and can be based on geographical location. In a dynamic world where a delicious treat such as a Jamaican bulla can go sour in Trinadad where it carries a different meaning, you would not want to ask for a delicious brown and spicy bulla in Trinidad, because a bulla in Trinidad refers to a homosexual.
As a trained and experienced designer we know that first impressions last, if we get the first impression wrong then there might not be a second chance to correct the matter and the possible potential to lose a once faithful client. With so many competition for work, a designer can not afford to not research the culture that his presentation or designs will be displayed. Research has always been a vital part of the design and creation process and with powerful online research tools now available, there should be no excuse to understanding the culture where presentations are being made.

Blog #3 What is the difference between a designer’s resume vs. a non-designer’s resume.

A resume is a written compilation/summary of your education, experiences, credentials, skills and accomplishments that is used to apply for jobs. It is one of the most important pieces of any job application. It shows a potential employer that you are qualified for the position you are seeking. It is NOT a biography of everything you have done as the reviewing time is very short. The purpose of a resume is a way to get you an interview.

With that being said in my opinion the difference between and designer’s resume and a non-designer’s resume is basically the visual aspect of it.

A non-designer’s resume is more traditional and boring with no form of graphic art displayed. Usual just a white print paper with black type.

A designer’s resume however, is very different and unique to that potential employee. It allows that individual to use this 1st opportunity to showcase their creativity giving them that edge above competitors trying to get that interview.

Blog #2 What is the importance of planning before working on your artwork?

Have you ever heard the quote from Benjamin Franklin “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail”? Of course you have and I think this is a quote we all agree with and can relate. Starting a project without a careful plan is like starting a trip without a map. You might finally get where you're going, but you're likely to spend a lot more energy and resources going around in circles trying to figure things out rather than journeying straight to your destination. A detailed work plan will not necessarily eliminate ALL problems that you might encounter during the production of a project but will definitely afford you the opportunity to:
v Organize your thoughts,
v Assess and prevent potential difficulties.
v Helps identify goals
v Offers directions
v Uncovers problems
v Adds professionalism
v Gives perspective

Great ideas involve planning. Planning is vitally important to success

Blog #1 What is communication?

The amazing thing about communication is that we all do it (all living things), realizing it or not, understanding what it really is or not. It is simply the act of transmission of information between two or more individuals in order to create a common understanding. Although this is a simple definition, when we think of how we can communicate the subject becomes more complex. There are different types of communications and more than one may occur at any time. Communication includes verbal, non-verbal and electronic namely human interaction. As human beings, we use communication to: relate to others, socially connected, to greet, to attract attention, emotions, share feelings, express an opinion, agree, disagree, explain, exchange of information, questions, answers, tease, agree to negotiate, argue, manipulate, compliment, comment, protest, complain, describe, encourage, guide, provide feedback, showing humor, discuss interests, be polite, Make Friends, interest or Express disinterest, etc.
